Adopting From Animal Lifeline

The animals here at Animal Lifeline's Shelter are very important to us. It is only because we care so much about them that we are so particular about the homes we place them in. We hope that as you read the following guidelines and requirements, you will understand and share in our efforts to place these animals in the best of homes.

Please note the following requirements in order to be approved for adoption throught Animal Lifeline of Iowa:

1. If you have owned pet(s) in the past, you must provide a veterinarian reference on the application so that we may verify proper pet care in the past.

2. You must have a valid Driver's License or legal form of identification and a home telephone.

3. If adopting a pet in the winter time, you must be able to provide an inside home for the pet unless it is otherwise agreeable to Animal Lifeline.

4. We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone.

5. All adoption decisions are final.

ANIMAL LIFELINE OF IOWA ADOPTION GUIDELINES

Animals will be placed only with adults of legal age who intend to keep them as household pets. No dogs will be placed to serve merely as guard dogs or hunting dogs and no cats will be placed just to function as barn cats or mousers. Adopters will be strongly encouraged to keep adopted cats inside only.

Puppies and kittens under 16 weeks of age will not be placed in homes where there are children under six years of age. Health and humane authorites agree that a young child usually cannot be expected to handle a puppy or kitten properly. Mishandling is likely to result in injury to the animal or the child, or both.

No animal will be released for adoption as a gift to another person. The recipient may not want an animal, the animal may not be suitable for the recipient's lifestyle, or the recipient may not meet the criteria for a responsible pet owner. Animal Lifeline will issue "Gift Certificates" that may be redeemed by the recipient, but Animal Lifeline reserves the right to refuse adoption to any person that fails to meet the criteria for a responsible pet owner.

Because of the potential for abandonment, students are carefully screened and counseled before being approved for pet adoption. Adopters must be prepared to give lifelong care to the animal they adopt.

If the applicant rents, WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM THE LANDLORD IS REQUIRED before the adoption application is approved. This is for the protection of the pet and the adopter.

No animal adopted from Animal Lifeline of Iowa may be sold or given away to another person. If the adopter can no longer keep the animal it MUST be returned to Animal Lifeline's shelter.

All Adopters are required to fit their new pets with properly fitting collars (with elastic insert for cats) bearing a permanent tag with the owners name, address & telephone number. All dogs are released from the shelter with a temporary tag bearing Animal Lifeline's information and an order form to obtain a permanent tag. The adopter is required to keep the temporary tag on the dog until they have a permanent one available.

Serious consideration is given to the adopter's ability to provide adequate exercise for the dog. Fenced yards are preferred. Consideration will be given if the adopter is able to provide adequate exercise for the dog. NO DOG WILL BE PLACED AS AN OUTSIDE DOG WITHOUT A FENCED YARD OR RUN.

Pre and Post-Adoption Home Visits may be conducted by Animal Lifeline. Identity will be confired by current Driver's License at the time of adoption.

A post-adoption physical and stool check is offered to adopters by Avondale Animal Hospital at 4318 SE Army Post Rd. Call for an appointment (515) 262- 6111
