Garden Chronicle

G3-the new additionA new bed, from sod cutting to harvest.

PerennialsA chronicle of a season in beds that have been planted for some time. Every season there are changes, but several of the perennials have had 2 or more years to root. I will add more each month, until we have it all from spring to winter.

March-April May June

Akasha overseeing my work. Tools scattered everywhere, and piles of sod here and there, what a mess. But oh so much fun!

Digging the sod by hand was hard work, but well worth it in terms of satisfaction. Using a simple garden fork, I lifted the sod, moving it to bare spots, and found wonderful black dirt, just a regular earthworm party, and a pleasant mix of inert materials. Perfect for veggies!

Finding many good poles among the brush pile,
a pea trellis appears.

End of March-April

May 14, 1997 - Spring is in full swing. Peas and irises are peeking out. Seeding and mulching are well under way.

Milk jugs protect tender tomato plants running down the center of the pea trellis.
By the time that the tomatoes have size, the peas should all be harvested and the trellis will then support the tomato plants. That's the plan anyway, lets see what happens! Among the tomato plants is a row of lettuce.
Also this should be harvested by the time the tomatoes need the space.
A shot from the far west fence of the yard.
In the foreground is the perennial bed and strawberries.
Some herbs are intermixed throughout the yard.
*sigh* Summer gardening is in the air, the promise that the freezes are gone,
and the season has just begun!

June 7, 1997 - By now everything has had time to gain some size. The peas have pods, the potatoes are blooming. The Pole beans are about 3" high but not quite climbing the poles.

The spinich is thriving, and I have nice rows of beets. The corn is even sprouting stong. My second pea trellis is taking shape, with new pea plants about 4" high. Cucs are just getting started under their stakes, but there is pleny of time for them to take off. I just missed getting a shot of the Irises in full bloom, but they are still lovely. The grapevine in back is gaining size daily. At this point there are small grapes already forming.
