was the mascot for the Storm. I say WAS because 20 hours before
the home game against Anaheim they called me to tell me not to
bother to show up. It seems the marketing guy wanted a relative,
son or brother, to wear the costume. Then the guy only showed up
for one half of a game!!!! Waste of money on the costume, Waste
of compensation that had already been given to me. A total lack
of professionalism. So that is my complaint. Until EVERYONE
associated with this league acts in a professional manner, we
will continue to sit on the back burner of the sports world. This
is something that can and will be easily achieved.
I am an avid Tampa Bay Storm fan. In fact I'm so avid I became their mascot. "CY THE EYE" here, as in cyclone. Mascot for the world champion Tampa Bay Storm.
I became the mascot for the storm last year. Was also the mascot for the texas rangers basball orginization for 5 years. BASEBALL IS LAME. WHENE ARE YOU NETWORK TV EXECS. GOING TO FIGURE THAT OUT!!!
This year we begin our season playing in the new Ice Palace right on Tampa Bay. Only holds 19,000, compared to the Thunderdome in ST. Pete which holds 40,000 I thought the thunderdome was loud, wait till we get a roof over our heads.
Cant wait for the rematch against the barnstormers!!!!!!
Hey any of you rattler fans. Did you see the big 6 foot snake with the baby's rattle taped to the tail that I was smacking around when your team came here.

Since I've posted on the list (finally), I guess on should get
into the act on this intro. thing, too (better late than never).
I grew up in Memphis, and I joined the list because it was the only way to keep up with the Pharaohs (down here the only two football teams the local media think exist are Alabama and Auburn). Since the Pharaohs have joined the graveyard of Memphis pro sports teams (Portland Forest Dragons, ugh! It reminds me of when the Memphis Rogues (NASL) moved to Calgary and became the Calgary Boomers), I guess I'll now be following the new team in Nashville. Actually, Nashville is only half the distance that Memphis is from here so I'll have a better shot at seeing a game in person now. **********<end of entry>**********

I had never heard of arena football until they

one the Snakes played in '92 (I had planned on going to the very
first one, but that was preempted because I was picking up my son

Currently a student majoring in Computer Information Systems (may switch to Computer Science if/when I transfer to a 4-year school). Maybe an analyst... anyways...
I've been a fan of the Albany Firebirds since 1992. I had real reservations about going at first (my brother convinced me to go). I loved it and been a fan since. Dragging someone to a game a good way to make them a fan (tough love I guess).
Out of the "Big 4" sports I like hockey the best (New Jersey) also am a fan of the Albany River Rats (AHL). I am a fan of Siena College's sports programs (hockey, football, basketball, baseball).
I guess that'll do it... not much else to tell

My name is Mike Smith. I am 25 years, married six years, and have

and manage the office for a plastic injection molding plant and

I live in an Arena Football vacuum. With the demise of the Pharaohs & the Stampede, my closest team is now eight hours away (Barnstormers or Kats). My wife and I plan on going to the Founder's Day weekend in Des Moines. Tickets for that go on sale March 3.
I started to follow Arenaball after reading an article in Sport Magazine's NFL preview back in 1987 or 1988 (i remember that the cover of the magazine was gold). I have been to games in Dallas(2), Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City (exhibition), and Memphis(2). IMO, Oklahoma City would be a great town for Arenaball. They are building a new arena and the city loves football.
My other interests include the Los Angeles Dodgers (HUGE fan), NASCAR, and pro wrestling (with those last two, Dave Carlson and I ought to get along great).
I really enjoy the list and look forward to a

FOUND AFL LIST: Ken Gill messaged me in April to tell me about it.
I have been an observer mostly and it has been a great source of
information. Fans are passionate about their teams and the group
on this list is very passionate about the league. AFL LIKES: The
coaches and athletes are extremely cooperative, they desire and
appreciate coverage moreso than a lot of professional teams in
other areas as well as some college football teams (if you
understood football in the south, you would know it's treated
like NFL in other areas) AFL DISLIKES: Their inability to
negotiate a workable TV contract that would better promote the
league. Other interests: If it's sport, I'm interested.
I've read numerous comments on coverage that the league gets. True, space is not given to the AFL equal to that of the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL in some areas. And I read the comments of Buddy Oakes from Brentwood who called the two papers here in town ''local rags'' and said the coverage had dropped off dramatically since the Oilers started camp. Simply put, that is hogwash. The Banner - which is a Monday-Friday afternoon ''rag'' has run a story on the Kats every day since the tryout camp in early April. The media deserves criticism for many things - the paper has only sent me on the road one time this season, that is because we don't have a Saturday paper - but make sure what you say isn't blind bias because the coverage you seek isn't what you think it should be. I've treated the team as a professional football team.
Sorry for the ranting, but I even heard a guy call in to one of the local talk stations complaining about the lack of coverage and, at least at our paper, it's not true. **********<end of entry>**********

What I don't like: Messages in Mime format, quoting long messages in your reply, some subjects beat to death, otherwise, nothing!
Interesting Facts: Ran an arena football office pool at my old employer in Milwaukee. Generated a lot of interest in the office...got many co-workers to go check out the game...Attended several Fighting Pike games last year.
AFL wish: Arena Playoff game in Milwaukee!

Also be advised that Nick Gandy is no longer with the League. His replacement is David Cooper, former Media Director for the Phoenix Suns. I know David personally. bankroll the team like New York City or some of the other large

I think the league needs to get a better Tv contract, tape delay games just don't cut-it. Just a though for any Front Office personel out there, what about asking your season ticket holders to help out with getting better TV coverage? When sending out ticket renewals, send a letter along asking people send a letter to ESPN asking for more coverage. If this was a league wide thing we may be able flood ESPN with 10,000 or more letters asking for more Arena Football coverage, couldn't hurt!

Well, Since my wife chimed in, I guess I'll have to now...*Thanks,
honey!*
My name is Doug Waer, and I've been an Rattlers fan since their first year here in Phoenix. I only went to the occasional game for the first three years, and my first playoff game when the Snakes met the Detroit Drive. I finally got up the gumption to buy season tickets (sec 203) two years ago, and we're planning on upgrading this season, if the wife and new baby will let me. :) I can't wait for the first game this year against the TB Storm!
I run the Rattlers page at http://www.primenet.com/~dwaer/rattlers.html much to the annoyance of my wife. She really hates the fact that I'm always taking so many notes during the games so I can put up decent recaps on the web page. I'd like to put more information (and pictures) on the page, but family being the priority that it is...
I write real-time embedded software for the former McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company, now Boeing (if the feds will let 'em) for the Longbow Apache attack helicopter. If you want an accurate simulation of what the AH-64D looks like, go buy the Jane's program for the IBM...it's _real_ close. I wrote the heads-up-display and radar display portion of the SW.
I'm 30 (ugh...just this year too), married to a lovely woman, and have a handsome 1.5 yo son, and number two due any time now. If you've been to any of the Sears portrait studios in the Phoenix area this Christmas season, you might have seen a picture of our boy on the wall on display. No...my wife doesn't work for Sears. :) And no...I'm not the slightest bit proud of him! :) *grin*
I graduated from Arizona State University (Damn! They shoulda' had it!) in 1989 with a (what else?) Computer Systems Engineering degree.
The rest of the stuff, y'all can read on the web page: http://www.primenet.com/~dwaer/ (I'll update it soon dear...)
Gotta get back to work now and try to figure out, "What was I _doing_ before Christmas???"

squeaking by 21, and am a full-time mother. So, when given the
chance to get out, I'm all for it. That's the reason I started
going to the AFL games. But, unfortunately, I had to go and get
addicted :) I don't plan on missing too many games, this season,
but I'll let the new little one make my decisions for a while :)
Hmmm...as far as education goes, I had to cut mine short, when I became a mother, 2 years ago. I'll be returning in the fall, hopefully, to ASU(*sniff*), studying to be a Pediatric Surgeon.
As for family, they all live 1000 miles away in Northern Cal. My husband and his family are they only ones around here. Here being Phoenix...I thought I said that, but I guess not. I just recieved mail about the Ironman Football league, and am seriously considering going down there to check things out. I'd like a tentative or actual schedule, if anyone has one in his or her possession. I can't guarantee I'd be able to go...but, as aforementioned, I'll let the little one make that decision :)
As for interests, the list goes on and on :) I go from performing musically, to sitting on the sidelines at Cowboys games. Dallas being the best team in the NFL(not just 'cause I was born there, either), of course. As for the other sports, I really don't watch all that many televised games. If I can't participate, I really don't derive much enjoyment from them. The Suns are a good team, even if the games are nearly impossible to get to toward the end of the season.
Come on, write back, already! And by the way,

FOUND AFL LIST: I can't remember! Have been a subscriber for a
long time! FAVORITE TEAM: Rattlers, Rattlers, and more Rattlers.
:) AFL LIKES: Non-stop action! Fans don't have to wait 20 minutes
for a score! Players love to play football and that's obvious.
Short field provides opportunities galore. Family affordability (arena
football is something my sons and I do together -- and love it).
Players on both sides of the ball. Heck .. . I love the whole
thing! AFL DISLIKES: Some of the rules which, in my opinion,
break up the game. So far, the officiating isn't the best, but as
the league grows and matures, so will the officials.
Introductions -- great idea!
Personal: I live in Phoenix, AZ (don't care if it's a dry heat -- it's hot!) with my two young adult sons (Callan and Clay), my Boxer (Jager), and 5 cats (Trigger, Ringo, Lucky, Raider, and Mickey). Ringo and Lucky are named for football plays -- my older son coaches varsity football at the high school level.
Education: Started off way back when in pre-vet at Colorado St. Univ, but that was before it was popular to allow women into the vet school. Ended up in Animal Science, just 6 hours short of a B.S. By that time, I had married and left school when he got a job away from the area. Had the two boys and then divorced, finding myself with total responsibility for my family. In the meantime, I accidentally fell into radio broadcasting which turned out to be a very successful 20-year career. During that career, I went back to school and got an A.A. in Broadcast Communication. Two years ago, I was part of an "axe the long-timers and replace with lower-salaried folks" move by management -- lost my job at a Phoenix station (after being there 12 years).
Was time to take stock of my life. I realized I didn't much like the broadcast industry anymore -- enjoyed being a talk show host, but not the industry -- it's changed so much and I don't like the changes (which I find to be quite negative). Finally decided to do something I've wanted to do for years: go back to school and get my B.A. so I can teach history and government. I started a year ago and just finished my last class at Ottawa University. On Monday will start my student teaching at a high school in the west Valley. Major: Secondary Ed/Social Studies. When I finish student teaching, I'll be certified in Social Studies (history, government, economics, geography) and Communication Arts -- at the secondary level. My friends tell me I'm a masochist. ;)
Talk about mid-life changes, huh?!!
Football: Well, hey . . . my sons played football and I love it -- at any level. Learned about arena ball when doing a news story about the Rattlers -- sounded like fun. I immediately got season tickets for me and my sons. We were at the very first Rattlers home game -- WOW! I haven't missed a home game since. I much prefer arena football to the NFL. Will watch most any football, though -- and will definitely be watching the Rose Bowl today! Go ASU!
Interests: Studying the Constitution/history, obedience work with my Boxer (he has one obedience title and we're working on the next one), reading anything/everything, photography, and -- football. I'm at every game Callan coaches and we "debrief" right after the game. Clay is in school, working toward being a certified athletic trainer.
I'm an Arizona native (pretty rare these days) and love it here. Have met a couple people from this list at Rattlers games, but have yet to make it to one of the pre-game parties -- maybe this year! I can't wait for the season to begin!
Favorite Teams: AFL: Rattlers, Rattlers, and more Rattlers. :) NFL: Denver Broncos. NBA: Phoenix Suns. WNBA: Phoenix Mercury. High School: Alhambra Lions
What I like most about the AFL List: Information around the league is hard to come by through normal channels -- this list provides that info. Also gives fans a chance to feel involved in the league's future -- and become involved in some friendly team rivalry.
What I dislike most about the AFL List: Since I
manage two other mailing lists, I find it hard to deal with
flaming, abusive behavior. Rivalry is fun -- until it goes beyond
good taste. On the whole, though, I'd say this list is comprised
of some pretty neat folks who share a goal: betterment of the AFL.

been a season ticket holder with the Rattlers for 3 years! My
wife and I have taken road trips to Las Vegas & Anaheim for
support. (They lost both times) :-( I also coach in the Arizona
Football League. (Mesa Lightning) The season begins it's
preseason this weekend. (After 3 months of practice the guys are
ready for action) I've always tried to push the Arena league to
those people who have never seen it. I try and take someone who
has not been to a game for exposure. **********<end of entry>**********

FOUND AFL LIST: On somebody's arena homepage, I think? FAVORITE
TEAM: Albany Firebirds, season ticket holder for '97 and '98.
Attended 3 games in '96, one in '95 & '94. AFL DISLIKES: The
kick-off rules, inconsistent ref's calling players OB when they
hit the side rail, but don't step over the out-of-bounds line,
and the running time on the clock.
Football experience: Played in high school and college (Springfield College). Coached on the HS level. Favorite college teams: Syracuse University and Springfield College. What I like most about the AFL: The passing, excitement, scoring, and fan friendly atmosphere. What I dislike most about the AFL: The kick-off rules, inconsistent ref's calling players OB when they hit the side rail, but don't step over the out-of-bounds line, and the running time on the clock. Why I prefer the AFL over the CFL and the NFL? Excitement from pre-game until 30 minutes+ after the game. What I would like to see happen to the AFL: A TV CONTRACT that has weekly LIVE games Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday Nights. More national/regional media coverage. GO BIRDS IN '2000 Out Daughter Amy a graduate of Niagara University is a membewr of the Buffalo Destroyers Dance Team, The "Bombshells" for the 2000 season. **********<end of entry>**********

FAVORITE TEAM: IOWA BARNSTORMERS FIRST AFL EXPERIENCE: saw my
first game in (IA) 1995 when we lost I believe 4 of 6 at home.
Attended 1995 Semi-Final loss against Orlando & I was 'hooked'.
Bought split season ticket in 1996. Purchased season tickets for
1997, as I was tired of missing the 4th quarter of playoff games
to wait in line for tickets to the next playoff game. AFL LIKES:
Total excitement, and the players and fans love for the game. AFL
DISLIKES: Media coverage could be much better.
Finally got my in-basket cleanout so here's my bio:

FAVORITE TEAM: Detroit Drive (I WANT 'EM BACK!)
FAVE CFL TEAM OF ALL TIME: Montreal Alouettes
I started to follow the Arena League ever since it started in 1987, but couldn't find standings anywhere I looked. When Arenaball came on syndicated TV the next year, I really got into it. That's when I first became a fan of the Drive. I was P.O.'ed when Arenaball didn't come back to free TV in '89, but I still followed the league up to 1990. Somehow, I got cut off from the league. Now that this list is up and Arenaball info is plentiful on the 'Net (I mean that!), I can still follow what I missed and what is coming up.
Cheers to all!
